The historic heart of Copenhagen, in the prime spot on Kongens Nytorv (or “The King’s New Square”), work has officially begun on the transformation of Laksegade Quarter. The roughly 50,000 square meter site previously served as an important financial hub for nearly 150 years. It will now be redeveloped into an open, lively urban quarter blending offices, a hotel, retail, and high-quality public spaces.
The KanAm Grund Group acquired the property in 2020 on behalf of an investment fund held by a German pension scheme and manages the asset on their behalf. After the departure of the previous long term tenant, Danske Bank, the site is being carefully refurbished and repositioned for modern, sustainable mixed use. KanAm Grund Group oversees the urban redevelopment in partnership with Danish Thylander A/S.
Construction begins – first phase of implementation
A general contractor agreement with NCC has been signed, launching the first stage of the physical transformation. This initial phase includes renovating five office buildings and creating two new retail units. The original architecture of the quarter will be uncovered and preserved, while new design solutions - such as improved indoor climate control and enhanced accessibility - will be integrated to meet the needs of modern occupiers in such a landmark location. The goal is to merge historical architecture with functional and inspiring workplaces.

The development aims to preserve the quarter’s historic character while introducing new opportunities for work, community, and city life. Carefully restored architecture, modern energy concepts, and a lively mix of uses will reintegrate the area into Copenhagen’s dynamic urban fabric.
